The European Athletics Association will be discussing next year's major meetings in Malta with a conference that assembles more than 300 delegates getting underway today at the New Dolmen Hotel, Qawra.

A host of athletics personalities will be at the conference which starts this morning with an Athletes' Commission Meeting.

The conference will be chaired by Hansjorg Wirz, president of the EAA. The IAAF will be represented by former Olympic and world pole vault champion Sergey Bubka, of Ukraine.

Among the distinguished guests in Malta this weekend are Jonathan Edwards, the British triple jump champion, and former athletics stalwarts Gabriela Szabo, Lyn Davies, Irena Swezenka and Valery Borzov.

Of particular interest today will be an assembly for the athletic associations of Europe's small states. Athletics Malta will be represented by president Anthony Chircop and secretary Edwin Attard.

One of the main events this weekend will be the distribution of awards for Europe's best athletes of the year, tomorrow evening.

This year, the honours went to javelin's Tero Pitkamaki, of Finland, and Croatian high jump champion Blanka Vlasic.
