Sammy Spiteri, 23, who lost his life when his car hit a tower crane in Xewkija early on Sunday morning, died of ruptured lungs on impact, a post mortem has revealed.

The accident happened in Triq Ghajn Qatet. The Mitsubishi Lancer being driven by Mr Spiteri was crushed under the weight of concrete blocks as the crane toppled over.

Sources at the scene told The Times on Sunday that he appeared to be practically unscathed despite his car having been flattened.

The police said the post mortem showed that Mr Spiteri ruptured his lungs on impact with the crane.
