Go Malta Television Awards launched

Mermaid Media Entertainment Ltd has just launched the second edition of the Malta Television Awards, which will this year be known as the Go Malta Television Awards.

Nove Wine and Beer Bar in St Julian's hosted the launch on September 22. Those present were offered a welcome drink by Campari. Finger food and Palatino Wines were provided by Nove Wine and Beer Bar and Mastergroup respectively.

The launch was under the patronage of Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech, who praised Mermaid Media Entertainment Ltd for organising the second edition of the awards. He emphasised that an initiative "honouring a year of excellence in the local television industry" is to be lauded and supported by all those involved.

The many guests were addressed by Noelene Miggiani, director of Mermaid Media Entertainment Ltd, who explained the changes that have taken place since last year's awards. She explained that the changes were a direct result of the experience gained from last year's event.

This year, the three main television stations will have a representative on the organising committee. Louiselle Vassallo will be representing Net TV, Ruth Vella will represent One TV and Simon Lumsdon will represent TVM.

One of the major changes is the introduction of two new awards - Best Cameraman and Best TV Set Design. Ms Miggiani said that a cameraman is the right-hand man of the director because of the invaluable contribution to the visual presentation of the programmes.

Another change, Ms Miggiani explained, was the definition of "original script". For this year's awards, the script is being limited to drama and comedy.

The Best Animation Award has been replaced with the Best Digital Effects Award to widen the spectrum of technical and creative artists participating.

Ms Miggiani also announced that, thanks to sponsorships by Go and Vascas Jewellers, there will be two People's Choice Awards, one for Favourite TV Personality and another award for Favourite TV Programme.

Awards consultant Tonio Farrugia explained the changes and improvements to the rules and regulations governing the awards. Among other things, he explained that the period being covered in this year's awards is July 1, 2006 to September 20, 2007.

As from next year, the period covered will be a 'television year' - from October 1 to September 30.

Mr Farrugia explained the method of submission of entries. He said that if there are less than three submissions in any one category, the submissions will be shifted to a category acceptable to whoever submits the entry. If there is no agreement, the awards will not be given.

A major change from last year's awards is the restriction on submissions: a programme can only be submitted in one category. The promoters explained that each programme has its special characteristic and therefore should not be submitted in multiple categories.

Franco Aloisio, head, corporate communications and public affairs of Go, title sponsors of this year's awards, said: "Go is proud to support the Malta Television Awards, an event that promotes and rewards the local television scene which over the past years has increased in quality and viewership. With the entry into the television market, Go is very keen to support initiatives that push forward local productions. We augur success to all nominees and to the organisers of the Go Malta Television Awards."

Vascas Jewellers, represented by Mark Vassallo, has this year increased its support. This year's trophy, which the promoters have not yet unveiled, is a work-of-art made of silver. Mr Vassallo expressed his satisfaction for his company's contribution towards a worthwhile initiative.

Silvio Scerri, managing director of Nexos Lighting, said that his company was involved in most television productions throughout the past year, so it was only natural for it to be part of the Go Malta Television Awards that recognise and honour these same productions. Mr Scerri promised that the awards night, to be held on November 24, would provide Nexos with an opportunity to put on an unforgettable show.

It was not only business talk for the high-profile delegates who were in Malta last month for annual meeting of the Financial Institutions Shareholders Group of the European Investment Fund.

Celebrating China's National Day

The Chinese Ambassador, Chai Xi, and his wife Zhang Rufen, last Friday week hosted a reception at the Westin Dragonara to mark the 58th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Hundreds of guests, led by President and Mrs Fenech Adami, attended the open-air reception. Red lanterns and an ensemble playing traditional music on Chinese instruments - not to mention the food - helped to create a "Chinese" atmosphere.

In his address, Ambassador Chai, who has been in Malta since April, said that tremendous changes were taking place both in China and Malta.

Last year, China's economy continued to maintain its spectacular performance with 10.7 per cent growth. With its GDP standing at $2.7 trillion and foreign trade at $1.76 trillion by the end of 2006, China was the world's fourth largest economy and the third largest trading country. By mid-2007, China's foreign reserves still topped the list by reaching $1.33 trillion. Double-digit growth is again expected this year.

At the same time, China has taken various actions and measures to save energy, protect the environment, improve product quality and food safety.

However, Ambassador Xi continued, though China is making remarkable economic progress, it is still a developing country and will remain so for a long time to come. Of its 1.3 billion people, 21 million still live in poverty. Given the huge population denominator, China's per capita GDP was only $2,042, ranking 112th in the world.

"This means we still have a very long way to go and various problems to sort out before we turn our country into a modern country with a prosperous standard of living, a well-protected environment, an advanced culture, and a truly harmonious society," he added. "This is why we are following a people-oriented approach and pursuing a scientific outlook on development. China will stick to the reform and opening up policy while bearing the need for efficient social and economic development in mind."

Speaking on Sino-Maltese relations, the Ambassador said that high-level exchange of visits has continued, and the two countries have been supporting each other in major international affairs. "China highly appreciates the Maltese government for its consistent adherence to One China policy," he stressed.

He was pleased to say that total bilateral trade reached $830 million last year. "The China-Malta relationship is a model of friendly relations between countries of a different size and social system".

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malta and the People's Republic of China. With the co-operation of the Maltese Foreign Ministry, the Chinese Embassy co-hosted a commemorative concert and a seminar to mark the event.

Ambassador Xi recalled Foreign Minister Michael Frendo's visit to China last May, during which two agreements were signed. Dr Frendo led a 39-strong Maltese business delegation, the largest ever in the history of Sino-Maltese relations.

As a result of that visit, high-tech companies and food and beverage companies from both countries have started to exploit areas of co-operation and investment, Mr Xi said. Moreover, 11 Maltese government officials have participated in various seminars and human recourses training programmes in China, mostly on business and management. Besides, more and more Maltese are travelling to China.

An outstanding feature of cultural co-operation between the two countries this year was the Silent Warriors - Chinese Terracotta Soldiers Exhibition at the National Museum. He also referred to the 2007 Valletta Chinese Spring Festival, and many other exhibitions and concerts.

Ambassador Xi said he was confident that a Confucius Institute will be set up at the University of Malta in near future, in partnership with Xiamen University in China.

The Chinese government has sent a new medical team to the Mediterranean Clinic Centre for Traditional Chinese Medicine and some doctors will work in Mater Dei Hospital from December.

A 52-member Maltese delegation, including 19 athletes, is now in Shanghai participating in the 12th Summer Special Olympics. The Ambassador wished them a pleasant stay in China and every success. "I also wish Maltese athletes could make history in the Beijing Olympics in 2008", he added.

He then proposed a toast to the prosperity and happiness of the Chinese people, to closer co-operation and friendship between Malta and China, to President Hu Jintao and President Fenech Adami and to the health of all present.

President Fenech Adami, in his reply, said Malta, and indeed the world, were "overwhelmed" by China's spectacular economic progress in the past few years. The figures quoted by Ambassador Xi were indeed "mind-boggling", he said. However, as the Chinese Ambassador said, China still had some way to go.

Malta too, the President continued, had to adapt to its new status as a member of the European Union. The island had moved forward also thanks to the co-operation of countries like China, which had provided help to Malta in difficult times.

Relations between the two countries had grown stronger over the years in all respects. The volume of bilateral trade was quite impressive, and cultural co-operation was strong. The Silent Warriors exhibition was the most successful in Malta's history, having been visited by some 80,000 people.

President Fenech Adami also welcomed the news of co-operation between the University of Malta and a Chinese university.

He ended by proposing a toast to relations between Malta and China, to the health and prosperity of the President of China and of the two peoples.

The speeches were followed by the playing of the Chinese and Maltese national anthems.
