A homeless Serb national who has a pending application for refugee status was yesterday entrusted to the immigration police after a court found him guilty of stealing a camera from a Go outlet.

Jankovic Dragoje, 47, was arrested by the police after security cameras at the Go outlet in Birkirkara caught him stealing a digital camera worth over Lm100 on September 26.

The police circulated photos of the man in all police stations and he was subsequently arrested at Manoel Island. He had said he was sleeping there as he was homeless, and he sold the camera for Lm30 so that he could buy some food. The police found no money on the man when he was arrested.

On finding him guilty, the court condemned him to 14 months imprisonment, suspended for three years, and requested the immigration police to continue to follow his case.
