Yet another mother has called to say that her doctor has not been supportive of her decision to continue to breastfeed her baby. Not only this, but that he also given incorrect information about breastfeeding which is clearly against global recommendations given by the World Health Organisation, and if his wishes were adhered to would be detrimental to the baby.
This is amazing to hear in this day and age, when science is continually coming up with evidence that breastfeeding is best for babies for up to two years and even later. The health benefits to mothers and babies are too numerous to mention here.
The Malta Breastfeeding Foundation is currently compiling a list of doctors, including obstetricians and paediatricians who know enough about breastfeeding, to give correct information, and who have shown that they have supported breastfeeding mothers in ways that help to increase their confidence to continue breastfeeding.
The foundation would like to encourage mothers and any other interested people to write in with names and contact details of these doctors at info@maltabreastfeeding.org.
