As a Form 5 student at Our Lady Immaculate School, Hamrun, I was one of the participants in the Youth Local Council, which gave youths aged 14 to 18 the opportunity to experience being elected and working in a local council.
The project was organised by the youth organisation KNZ in collaboration with seven local councils. Naxxar council was one of the councils that gave us youths living in the locality the opportunity to take part in this project and work on some proposals that we had made, like adding more bring-in sites in our locality and making the Naxxar public library more user friendly.
While thanking KNZ and Naxxar council, especially Salvu Sciberras, for giving us this opportunity, I would like to encourage more localities to participate in this project.
Today's youths are tomorrow's leaders. My experience in the council helped me to take more interest in our society. This kind of experience made me appreciate my locality more, as I also got the chance of meeting new people and making new friends. The experience made me and other youths believe in themselves and that they can make a difference.
Experiences of the Youth Local Council and National Youth Parliament are helping me achieve my dream, which is to become a politician. Although I am still young, I am learning a lot and gaining experience from such projects. It is very important for youths get involved in politics because we need experienced leaders to be in charge of our locality and also to lead our country.
