As part of the 400th anniversary celebrations of Michaelangelo Merisi di Caravaggio's time spent in Malta, the organising body Caravaggio 400 have commissioned a play from Joe Friggieri about the painter and his sojourn here.

Later this month Mr Friggieri's play in Maltese Caravaggio: L-inkjesta - Caravaggio The Investigation, also directed by the playwright, will run for three nights at The Manoel Theatre, Valletta. The play, which is sponsored by Heritage Malta, gives Caravaggio's few friends and numerous enemies the opportunity to argue their case. The painter's brushes with the law, his fiery temperament and the events leading to his death at the age of just 39 are hotly debated by fervent admirers of his work and ruthless detractors of his character.

Set intriguingly in present-day Malta, the drama, in the form of an investigation, brings the painter and his environment to life through a series of encounters with a number of witnesses, including patrons, models, biographers and critics. It highlights Caravaggio's departure from established artistic norms, the stunning originality of his works and the way they were received or rejected by his contemporaries.

Caravaggio will be played by that doyen of local actors Manuel Cauchi, while Moyra Muscat will be seen in the role of Caravaggio's mistress Lena Antognetti. Lena's other suitor Mariano Pasqualone will be played by Mariano Said and Lena's mother will be Marlene Psaila. Michael Tabone and Anthony Ellul also figure prominently. The set will be designed by Donald Friggieri.

• Caravaggio l-Inkjesta runs from October 19 to 21 at The Manoel Theatre, Valletta.
