There's a heck of a lot happening at The Manoel Theatre this month - music-wise and all of it very different. For tomorrow evening's Notte Bianca the theatre will be featuring three recitals by Trania. This is a brand new trio featuring Renzo Spiteri (drums & percussion), Walter Vella (flute & traditional reed instruments) and Mark Attard (piano & keyboards). They are described as fusing Mediterranean musical styles. It promises a fresh and innovative approach to music making. They will perform three sets of 45 minutes each. The first begins at 7.30 p.m, then at 9 p.m and finally at 10.30 p.m.

Next Tuesday evening Manoel audiences are in for a very special treat when the Malaysian-born dancer Mavin Khoo pays a return visit to the theatre. Mr Khoo caused quite a stir on his first visit two years ago with his superb technique. Then, as now, he was brought to Malta by The British Council. On this occasion there is a collaboration between the Council and The Manoel Theatre. He will perform an evening of Indian classical Bharata Natyam dance, featuring live music by international Indian vocalist Pushkala Gopal.

These days we seem to welcome very few visiting orchestras to our national theatre, well it's certainly not cheap to transport 40 or 50 musicians around the globe. But on October 15 the SinfoniaVarsovia will give a concert at The Manoel. The Sinfonia Varsovia was formed in 1984, in the framework of a project with the great violinist and teacher Sir Yehudi Menuhin. It has subsequently performed all over the world and has recorded with many international labels. Together with soloists, pianist Maria João Pires and violinist Augustin Dumay, they will play works by Mozart and Mendelssohn. The Sinfonia Varsovia will be under the baton of the Musical Director of the London Chamber Orchestra Christopher Warren-Green.

Yet another musical form will be presented at The Manoel on October 23 when the evening will be titled Mediterranean Vocal Studio Malta Showcase. This will comprise a programme of Maltese artistes demonstrating their proficiency in the American Legendary Speech Level singing technique. Guests for the evening will include leading personalities from the local music scene, plus overseas guests Sir Harry Cowell and Ms Lou Mullen from the UK record label PNC.

And finally, in a full to bursting month of music, yet another musical style makes it onto the Manoel stage. For three evenings from October 26 to 28 The Manoel Theatre Swings with GO. This will comprise a concert of swing standards arranged to a modern jazz idiom and performed by a 16-piece big band with vocalists Nadine Axisa and Daniel Cauchi. Under the musical direction of Sigmund Mifsud, the programme includes numbers from the repertoires of Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Diana Krall and Michael Buble.
