I refer to Richard A. Micallef's letter (September 22) entitled Recycling Red Tape in which he expressed concern about the current system for the recycling of commercial office waste.

First of all, WasteServ would like to thank Mr Micallef for his civic awareness and his efforts in recycling. It is such efforts that make a difference and they are much appreciated.

Secondly, WasteServ would like to clarify that the WasteServ offices are not in Floriana but in Sta Venera, and that permits related with the regulations of operations of waste management facilities are issued by Mepa.

Thirdly, we would like to emphasise that civic amenity sites do not accept commercial waste but only domestic waste generated by the public in general. CA Sites, which were an instant success and had an overwhelming response by the public, were created to accept bulky domestic waste which is deposited separately so that items can be recovered for recycling and renovation.

Also, it should be noted that there is a different procedure for the disposal of commercial waste, including waste generated by offices. These restrictions, it should be stressed, were made in order to ensure that private entities in the waste business, which operate in the collection of commercial and hazardous waste, where not put at a disadvantage by the introduction of the CA Sites. Thus, any commercial entity disposing of such waste needs clearance from Mepa prior to disposal.

In conclusion, for the benefit of the public, civic amenity sites are situated in Mriehel and Maghtab, with a third one in Hal Far opening shortly. Items that can be disposed of at these sites include recyclable waste (paper, carton, glass, metal, plastic), bulky waste such as furniture, mattresses, carpets, garden waste, oils, household hazardous waste (such as batteries, neon tubes and paints), tyres, white goods and other electronic and construction waste.
