Women's marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe returned to action after a 21-month break yesterday, finishing second in the Great North Run.

American Kara Goucher comfortably won in one hour six minutes 57 seconds, the fastest half marathon by a woman this year.

Radcliffe, who gave birth to a daughter in January and has since struggled with a back injury, was nearly a minute behind Goucher.
