The Union Haddiema Maghqudin yesterday marked its 41st anniversary, saying it had played an important role at decisive moments in the nation's history. Union president Gejtu Tanti said that as the second largest general union in the country, it had often had to fight these battles alone - such as when the country had to choose whether or not to join the EU.

The UHM said it was in favour of adopting the euro in the shortest time possible because it was convinced this would be beneficial to workers.

It was also carrying out an exercise to ensure that the currency change would not push up prices, Mr Tanti said.
