Rent reform proposals are to be presented to the Opposition "soon", the government said yesterday.
In a statement, the government said it was committed to reform the rent laws to eliminate injustices, while taking into account the fundamental need for everyone to have an adequate home.
"These amendments need to be implemented responsibly for the benefit of everyone," the government added.
Before drawing up the proposals, the Social Solidarity Ministry had analysed the current situation and looked at similar reforms carried out abroad and their impact.
The necessary legislative amendments needed to eliminate current anomalies make it necessary for the reform to be strengthened by administrative measures and schemes.
This was very delicate work and ideally required agreement between the two parties in Parliament, the government said.
Last week Alternattiva Demokratika chairman Harry Vassallo claimed that Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi was bluffing when he said he would soon write to the Opposition to present the proposals.
Dr Vassallo urged Dr Gonzi to include AD's rent law proposals in the forthcoming Budget.
The government said it was committed to striking a balance between "ensuring justice to property owners and the protection of vulnerable residents".
