Reference is made to the Malta Transport Authority's comments following the fatal accident in President Anton Buttigieg Road, Zejtun. The authority confirmed that for three years, the local council has been insisting on the installation of traffic calming measures, pelican lights, and an official speed limit.

On all three issues the ADT's final response proved to be negative, and to add insult to injury, persistent in requesting technical details from the council. The authority has forgotten that it commands the expertise and has the facilities to provide all three measures which the council is still requesting.

As can be clearly understood from an e-mail to the council a year ago from ADT, nowhere is a re-design of the road space for a cycle lane mentioned, let alone proposed. This is sheer speculation which the local council would be only too happy to have implemented. Forming a dangerous cycle lane and refreshing road markings is not redesign.

Even so, the local council is willing to co-operate - as always - to rectify and, if possible, eliminate the dangerous situation prevailing in President Anton Buttigieg Road.
