On June 5, the NCW Environment Committee launched its third competition with an environmental theme. The competition consisted of an artistic entry depicting a local species, tree, plant, bird, and animal.
No fewer than 95 entries were exhibited at St James Cavalier in Valletta. The main sponsor was the Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment which donated the first prize of an all-expenses-paid trip to an Italian region.
The winner was Nicholas Galea, 14, of Attard. Contacts were made with Graziano Cireddu from Pieve Emmanuelle in Milan who adopted the same theme, terms and conditions, to launch the competition in the Italian locality. The competition was also a success in Pieve Emmanuelle and consequently both winners visited each other's countries.
During a presentation and reception at the NCW Centre at Blata l-Bajda, Nicholas presented a 'diary' of his trip to NCW president Doreen Micallef, while Azzedine brought his winning presentation for all to admire. Ms Micallef welcomed the Italian guests, thanked the Environment Committee and its Coordinator Mary Gaerty for their initiative and augured that this competition would become a national event. Also present was Domenico Bellato, first secretary at the Italian Embassy.
