The way the Nationalist Party twists things is incredible. The issue of the drainage outflow in Balluta is a clear example. Anthony Psaila (Drainage Outflow, September 25), like Austin Gatt and the PN is not only twisting what Alfred Sant said about this issue but he is also showing the same insensitivity and arrogance shown by the PN towards the Balluta people and those who frequent Balluta Bay.
Dr Sant did not say that Lawrence Gonzi had to personally (or in his capacity as PM) solve the problem of the drainage outflow. He said that Dr Gonzi should assume the responsibility for the fact that two government entities, falling separately under two of his ministers, ended up in court blaming each other for the problem and in the meantime the drainage continued to flow into the sea with the resultant environmental damage and inconvenience to the people of Balluta.
A hands-on PM who is really concerned with the quality of life of his people would have ordered his two ministers to find a solution to the problem at once. Instead, the two entities ended up in court with the problem still not solved. That is why the PM is responsible for the environmental damage and inconvenience caused. In Dr Gatt's eyes and with his usual arrogant and insensitive way of dismissing the bread and butter issues of the Maltese people, Dr Sant may be the "leader of the manholes".
However, I am sure that in the eyes of the majority of the Maltese electorate, come the next election, Dr Sant will be seen as the only leader capable of addressing and solving the real problems the Maltese and Gozitans are facing - not even 10 Smart Cities will solve these with the PN in government!
