Kevin Kuranyi scored his fourth goal of the season to help Schalke 04 to a 2-0 win at MSV Duisburg, which put his team second in the Bundesliga yesterday.

Hamburg SV also won away, humbling Borussia Dortmund 3-0 to go third, level with Schalke on 13 points and one behind leaders Bayern Munich who host bottom club Energie Cottbus today. Hertha Berlin missed a chance to go top as Hansa Rostock came from behind to win 3-1 at the Olympic Stadium while Brazilian midfielder Diego netted in Werder Bremen's 1-1 draw at VfL Wolfsburg.

Tom Starke was at fault for Schalke's third-minute opener. The Duisburg keeper failed to collect on the edge of the area and striker Halil Altintop spun on the loose ball to fire into the empty net.

Peter Lovenkrands then broke down the left in the 75th minute and Kuranyi collected the Dane's pass before powering a shot beyond Starke from the edge of the box.

"We played some very good football tonight," Altintop said. "We could have scored two or three more."

Hamburg took the lead in the seventh minute at Dortmund when David Jarolim headed a weak clearance by keeper Roman Weidenfeller into space for Peruvian Jose Guerrero to scuff his shot into the bottom right corner.

Guerrero turned provider in the 42nd, bursting into the box and squaring for Rafael van der Vaart to tap in his fifth goal of the season.

Dortmund's Florian Kringe was sent off in the 51st before Hamburg striker Ivica Olic robbed Markus Brzenska on the edge of the box and beat Weidenfeller with a low shot.
