The Federation of Industry and the Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise yesterday advised importers and manufacturers to register with Mepa by Sunday in view of the forthcoming waste packaging regime which comes into effect next year.
Companies, however, are not necessarily obliged to register with licensed schemes by the end of September, they reminded in a statement issued yesterday.
The law simply obliges producers to submit a duly completed registration form to Mepa. The chamber and FOI will inform members at a later stage on further developments as and when these arise. Talks between the government and the constituted bodies over the matter are still being held.
The relevant form can be either obtained from the Waste Management office at Mepa or by downloading it from the authority's website on http://www.mepa.org.mt/Environment/index.htm?waste/national_waste_register/packaging.htm&1.
Further information can also be obtained by sending an e-mail on packaging@mepa.org.mt or by calling 2290 5020.
