The article Afternoon Hunting Banned "To Accommodate Foreigners" (September 18) quoted Lino Farrugia, the secretary of the hunters' federation.

Mr Farrugia insists on promoting hunting only to accommodate those who like hunting. He needs to be informed that the majority of the population have not been accommodated because they are not able to watch birds of different species in their natural habitat.

The Maltese have no option but to leave their country if they want to see the beauty of birds from different species. In our neighbouring Italy, we are consistently able to see very interesting birds, including a lot of eagles gliding over the Italian countryside. This, I think, is no coincidence. I cannot forget the incredible, continuous shooting when a tired eagle arrived in Malta near Rabat.

If according to Mr Farrugia the ban is "robbing innocent citizens", then he must consider how other citizens have been robbed of their right to enjoy the beauty of birds in the small countryside that exists.
