The Mosta Health Centre is closed until further notice following an accidental fire early yesterday morning.

A magisterial inquiry has concluded that the fire was caused by a short circuit in a computer at around 3 a.m. The panelling behind the computer also caught fire.

There were no patients inside the centre at the time. The staff on duty were not injured.

Members of the Civil Protection Department were called to douse the fire.

A Health Ministry spokesman said it was initially believed repair works could be completed within a day and the centre could be reopened yesterday evening.

But it later transpired that repairs would take longer and the centre is closed until further notice.

Patients needing treatment or to see a doctor can go instead to the Birkirkara Health Centre which will remain open throughout the night.

Appointments at the Mosta centre have been cancelled and patients will be given a fresh appointment.

The state pharmacy - which is based at the Mosta Health Centre - has not been affected and will continue functioning.

Patients who need more information can contact either the Birkirkara Health Centre on 2149 4961/2/3 or the Mosta Health Centre on 2141 1065 or 2143 2062.
