Price rises

I simply cannot understand the reason why Messrs Paul Smith and Albert Gauci Cunningham (Rising wheat prices, September 18) rushed into print to state the very obvious as well as to demonstrate that both gentlemen understood me rather imperfectly.

To these two gentlemen I say, adversus solem ne loquitur. By stating facts as they are, I was not engaging myself in any form of mockery with regard to the European Union.

What the aforementioned correspondents failed to do is read between the lines.

I am, of course, aware of the fact that most prices will never return to the level known about six months ago. This is where the crux of the matter lies. Whereas the increase in milk prices, and consequently also the price of butter, has been significant as of late due to a marked deficit in milk supplies all over the world.

People in my situation, having to live on a meagre pension, have seen no significant changes for a very long time to be able to pursue Mr Gauci Cunningham's advice to continue to enjoy what many others due to health reasons are deprived of having, that is, Danish butter.

I do hope that the aforesaid gentlemen as well as others will be guided accordingly.
