Going down Old Bakery Street in Valletta riding a motorcycle the other day, I turned right into South Street.

I was concentrating on not running over anyone or hitting other obstacles while turning.

I only got as far as a fast food outlet on that street when I was stopped by a smirking warden who gleefully told me to switch off the engine and await my turn to be booked for entering a pedestrian zone.

I had not seen a No Right Turn sign in Old Bakery Street and told her so. She replied it was not her problem.

As I was in the process of being given a ticket, two cars turned into South Street and like me, the drivers were told to stop by the warden.

It is obvious that without proper signage, hapless drivers keep entering a pedestrian zone.

However, as it seems that this particular stretch of road is a money-making machine for the local council, no proper sign will be forthcoming.
