The Armed Forces of Malta rescued a group of 30 migrants in the nick of time as their boat sank some 12 miles south east of Malta.

The AFM had been monitoring the vessel on Saturday and patrol boat P32 moved in to assist after it was noticed that the boat was drifting without power. It was taking water rapidly and was swamped as the migrants were transferred to the patrol boat, with some of them being plucked from the water, the army said.

The migrants, 21 men, seven women and two infants, were landed at Haywharf in Pietà.
