Optimised running gear, a longer wheelbase and a slightly larger body make the latest generation of the cult Smart Fortwo more comfortable. Active and passive safety have been further improved.

The new drive engineering provides even more agility and driving fun, and gives the latest version a top position worldwide in terms of environmental friendliness.

Smart, represented locally by Auto Sales Ltd of Mosta Road, Lija, have given the Fortwo a fresher, more masculine appearance, with the wide grin and large 'eyes' of the headlamps giving the car a more human face.

Some things do not change: the one-box design, compact dimensions, two-colour and two-material concept with a tridion safety cell and the innovative, extremely practical body panels.

It also embodies the brand's core values of innovation, functionality and joie de vivre. No other car has a younger clientele: 80 per cent of buyers are under 40.

Apart from being highly economical, lively and easy to drive, with an overall length of 2,695 mm, it occupies very little road space and has become a familiar sight in 36 countries worldwide. Over 770,000 first generation Smart Fortwos were built since it was launched in 1998.

There are three uprated 1.0-litre petrol engines, all three-cylinder, delivering 61, 71 and 84 bhp. All are mated to a new, automated manual five-speed transmission from Getrag. Consumption is 4.9 litres/100 km for the 84 bhp version and 4.7 litres/100 km for the other two.

Several versions are available, including a cabrio with an electric soft top, with four trim levels: Pure, Pulse and Passion, and Brabus.
