The controversy about the hobza Maltija has not stopped and it will not be long before the bakers' union demands another increase to the price of Maltese bread.
For the record, the price of bread in Britain went up by £1 as soon as the price increase of wheat was announced. Other countries, big or small, followed suit and Malta was no exception.
How can the people of Malta and the government find an objection to a small increase demanded by our hard-working bakers who toil all night while the objecting consumers are safe and sound in their beds? I think the one cent increase was an insult.
What about the bread men going round in their vans delivering bread to shops and homes? Did these people complain when the price of fuel went up? One has only to look at dustbins outside catering outlets and homes littered with hard stale bread to find out why. The answer: bread is cheap, plentiful and available nearly everywhere. Give the bakers their due and let's save the hobza.
