I fully agree with Shelley Tayar's sentiments (The Sunday Times, September 9). However there are some minor differences.

Any misunderstanding arose from my not being aware that "Rabbi" David Pollina is of the sect calling themselves Messianic Jews, or "Jews for Jesus". These people are not of the Jewish faith. I only agreed with Dr Pollina's historical thesis about Yoshua bin Yussuf not being a Christian who lived and died within the Jewish faith.

I defended Dr Pollina from the attacks of people denigrating the Jewish faith, and from the person who described the Jewish Congregation in Malta as "brethren", meaning Freemasons.

My father always explained to me that a number of people in Malta classed Jews as "Mazuni" i.e not believing in God, so when somebody refers to a group of Jews as "brethren", I know exactly what they are up to.

I know the history of the Jews in Malta, and of their sufferings during the Knights' rule.

While Jews do not readily proselyte from other faiths, they always welcome a convert as a Son of Abraham, and give him the Jewish name of Avraham Bin Avraham; after all "Ysrael khol haverim".

Mrs Tayar is right when she says I was not a Jew. I am a convert and am taking instructions in the faith, which explains my defence of Jews.
