Labour, especially its leader Alfred Sant, never really welcomed the SmartCity project.
For months on end they tried their best to cast doubts about this huge investment which will in the coming years create no less than 5,600 new jobs. Allow me to refresh readers' memories:
"People are concluding that the 'Smart City' deal could just turn into another Mosta Technopark project, which will serve to screen the transactions of luxury apartment entrepreneurs from abroad.
"To camouflage this, the government side has been boasting about the thousands of jobs in IT that 'Smart City' will create. But we have been here before." - Alfred Sant, The Times, September 27, 2006.
Opposition "Reservations" On SmartCity Deal - The Times, March 21, 2007.
Opposition Leader Alfred Sant did not take part in the Parliamentary debate which discussed the SmartCity project.
When Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi visited Dubai to attend Gitex, the second largest ICT fair in the world and to unveil the SmartCity master plan, the local media was invited to accompany the Prime Minister's delegation. The Labour Party's journalists were absent.
I must admit that being unenthusiastic about a project that will create thousands of jobs is beyond me.
