The National Student Travel Foundation (NSTF) bursaries scheme will be helping 21 students follow tertiary education overseas during 2007/8.
The Student Travel Bursaries Selection Board was composed of Ivan Zammit, Justin Fenech and Francis Stivala, secretary general of NSTF.
NSTF said the choice of subjects of the awardees highlighted the continued trend towards social disciplines with a number of post graduate degrees in education, international development, marketing, law, sports and exercise science, and undergraduate degrees in design and the arts. The sum disbursed will be Lm2,175.
Throughout the 22 years since these bursaries were awarded, more than 500 students have received Lm46,000 between them.
The contribution for these bursaries is raised by NSTF through the travel and tourism activities of its societies. The NSTF (Malta) was constituted by University of Malta students in 1977 to encourage and assist students to further their studies abroad.
NSTS said that while fresh opportunities of help have arisen since Malta joined the EU, the number of full-time students studying overseas in tertiary educational establishments has rocketed.
Suffice it to say that 800 students are following courses in the UK alone.
