The Malta Lift Association (MLA) is to hold a seminar on the responsibilities of lift installers and lift owners in the identification and assessment of risk.
The Occupational Health and Safety Act requires that adequate levels of safety be ensured in all workplaces at all times. It is the responsibility of every lift installer and of every lift owner to ensure that any work on or use of lifts is carried out in the safest possible way. Employers and workplace owners are thus obliged to carry out a suitable, sufficient, and systematic risk assessment of each workplace.
The identification and assessment of risk is a costly and time-consuming procedure that, if inadequately done, may not eliminate all potential hazards and so lead to dire consequences.
In a bid to facilitate the implementation of these mandatory risk assessments, the Malta Lift Association commissioned TuV Austria to carry out a Model Risk Assessment covering the different circumstances that must be addressed in relation to lifts, namely lift installation, general use of lifts and routine maintenance of lifts.
The Model Risk Assessment, published in book form, will be launched at the seminar on October 3 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.
The seminar will be opened by Anthony Camilleri, CEO,Malta Standards Authority.
Participants will be addressed by Anton Marschall, head of Lift Technology Division - TUV Group and Lift Technology Consultant to the EU, and Stephan Stormer - Lift Technology Consultant for EU states - TUV Group.
In addition to lift installers and service providers, the publication is of particular interest to OHS officers, maintenance managers, engineering consultants, insurance providers and surveyors and other parties who in any way are responsible for the safe use of lifts.
Further details are available from the association on 79834725.
