The Malta Labour Party would rather pay a Lm25 fine annually, imposed by law, than publish the audited accounts of its subsidiary companies, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said last night.

Replying to questions put to him by The Times journalist Natalino Fenech at an activity in Floriana as part of the independence anniversary celebrations, Dr Gonzi said the Nationalist Party publishes the audited accounts of its subsidiary companies as required by law. On the other hand, the MLP pays a Lm25 fine and refrains from publishing its accounts, he said.

Dr Gonzi said the Cabinet on Monday approved his proposal to open discussions on regulating party financing and yesterday he also received the support of the Parliamentary Group.

He said he has already declared on two separate occasions that the PN will publish all the details on income and expenditure in connection with the building project at the party headquarters.

Dr Gonzi said the PN finances itself through the generous donations of its supporters who contribute enthusiastically towards attaining the party's vision for the country.
