A policewoman was seriously injured and police had to use teargas to break up clashes between fans of Romania's Steaua and Rapid on the streets of Bucharest at the weekend, police said yesterday.

"Ten supporters of Steaua and two of Rapid were detained and fined 1500 lei ($617) for public disturbances," a police spokesman said, adding that two other Rapid supporters could face criminal proceedings after a Steaua fan was assaulted.

The policewoman was hospitalised with head injuries after a missile smashed her vehicle's window.

The match ended in a 0-0 draw.
