Trucks run by an experienced Italian contractor will be operating the transport of domestic waste from Gozo to Malta, using the same measures adopted in the rest of Europe, WasteServ said yesterday.

Following the closure of the Qortin Landfill in April 2004, WasteServ took on the task of providing transport services for domestic waste from Gozo to the engineered landfills at Zwejra and Ghallis in Malta.

So far this has been provided by Maltese contractors who all supported WasteServ in implementing a strategy that allowed for the Qortin landfill to be closed down, WasteServ said.

This service was now being improved upon due to the arrangments made with this Italian contractor who has a lot of experience in this sector in other parts of Europe.

This contractor, who is certified in ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001 and in OHSAS 18001, will set new and higher standards for WasteServ in its aim to provide and improve on its waste management serivces to the general public.
