Lifecycle challenge 2007
By Sophie Muscat, 10, of Sliema

The 2007 theme for the Lifecycle challenge is where only eagles dare! This year 25 cyclists will be cycling from Bucharest, in Romania, to Berlin, in Germany, for a total of 2.345 kilometres.

The aim of the challenge is to collect funds for Malta's state hospital renal unit.

A team of 16 people will be taking care of the logistics and preparing meals for the cyclists throughout the challenge. Several large companies have made donations and already the public are invited to show their support. The team have left Malta.

Scouting sunrise
By Matthew Axiak, nine, of Sta Venera

Hundreds of Maltese scouts gathered near Fort St Elmo, in Valletta to watch the sunrise of August 1. This was a special occasion to commemorate the Scouting Sunrise together with millions of other scouts all over the world.

This celebration renewed what Lord Baden-Powell began 100 years ago, on Brownsea Island, in Dorset, England, where the first scout camp was held.

Afterwards the scouts walked to the Floriana Granaries, where they passed through the centenary gateway to symbolically cross the line from one century to another.

Then they renewed the scouts' promise to herald another century of scouting.

Winners' names will be announced next week.
