Why is it still such a trait with "our" mentality to brand anyone who writes to commend someone, or to criticise another, biased, therefore prejudiced? I am, consequently, led to believe that partisanship still rules in Malta. The head of public relations at the Water Services Corporation deemed it fit to tap into my imagination, and also tried to turn my thrust on its head (Model Civil Servants More Commonplace Than Thought, September 6). He blatantly seeks refuge by involving the employees' credibility, when he knows, perfectly well, that they are not the ones perking, but the upper echelons of all government entities. Or is it that his chairman drafted his letter?

All I did is ask all directors and chairmen appointed by the government of the day, to emulate those who stick their necks out for the benefit of the citizen, as they are duty-bound to do. I have never come across any police or local council action in court against big contractors who flout the law, by-laws and regulations - take Veccia Road, Xemxija Road, Mizieb Hill and Manikata Road as examples. Visit the areas and see for yourself the hazards which are so blatantly ignored by all those who are paid to protect society. Take MTA as another entity that does not even follow its own brief - Mellieha Bay is filthy from early morning till late afternoon, when a couple of casually dressed men decide to carry away the bins (some rusty drums still used by the said authority), and leave all the sand littered with rubbish. Who is supposed to salvage the sand which ends up on the road? And, by the way, where are the swimming safety flags? Why are speed machine owners and users aches? Health Department and MMA please note (and take action - it is your duty, no matter what the culprit's colour of the eyes).

But then, we have come to expect, but not to accept, such spin from all public entities' PR managers. Brass tacks, please, Messrs WSC and all the like. Nuts and bolts need servicing. Being self-indulgent forms no part of any job and tends to be mawkish.
