Scheduling the past

Fort Campbell was scheduled as a Grade 1 monument on January 7, 1997 as per Government Notice Number 008/97, except for one block, the Officers' Mess, at the edge of the complex. The only reasonable explanation is that this was due to an error in the plotting of the scheduling map.

Fort Campbell was built in 1937/38 and was the last fort built by the British Military Services in Malta. The complex comprises of a number of detached blocks in order to decrease the possibility of its identification from the air. Due to the increase in aerial bombardment the elements of the fort were integrated within the landscape. This gives the fort and ancillary buildings a less military character, especially when compared to the earlier forts in Malta.
