An immigrant from Chad was jailed for 12 months for trafficking in cannabis while a Sudanese friend of his was jailed for nine months for possessing the drug with the intent to sell it in July this year.

Abubaker Bashir Hussein, 23, of Chad and Ali Gadem Abdelrahim, 26, of Sudan - who reside at the Marsa open centre - both admitted to the charges brought against them before Magistrate Lawrence Quintano.

The magistrate heard that they were found in possession of 16 cannabis-filled sachets amounting to 18.29 grammes.

Mr Hussein was jailed for 12 months and fined Lm300 and Mr Abdelrahim was jailed for nine months and fined Lm250. The magistrate ordered that the time they spent in preventive custody be deducted from their jail term.

Police Inspector Norbert Ciappara prosecuted.
