The distinguished actor Godwin Scerri once remarked of Francis Ebejer: "He, practically single handedly, dragged Maltese theatre kicking and screaming into the 20th century." Now, over 14 years after his death, this innovative playwright is to be remembered by the theatre group Bronk. They are to present: A Tribute To Ebejer at the theatre-in-the-round at St James on September 28 to 30 at 7.30 each night.

The project is the idea of actor/ director Dominic Said, who will direct excerpts from some of Mr Ebejer's best-known works. These include Is Sejha ta' Sarid, Hitan, Il-Hadd fuq il Bejt and Il-Gahan ta' Bingemma. Some of those taking part, like John Suda, Inez Farrugia, Maria Vella, Karmenu Vella, Dominic Said and Joe Quattromani have actually worked with Mr Ebejer. There are also one or two performers like Jesmond Triccas and Mario Spiteri who will represent the newer element.

A tribute to arguably Malta's greatest playwright is long overdue. So we have no hesitation in recommending A Tribute To Ebejer as this month's must see.
