Book of the month - Treasure trove
UFFIZI
Gloria Fossi
D & C, ISBN -13: 978 - 7153 - 2718 - 0
The Uffizi in Florence is certainly the oldest and possibly the finest museum/gallery in the western world and this pocket sized book does it great credit.
The Uffizi was founded in 1581 by Francesco I de' Medici. He filled its considerable space with artworks, carvings, statuary and other artifacts. The book points out that the actual Uffizi building was not originally designed as a gallery, but was intended in 1560 to house the administrative and magisterial offices of the city.
This book contains both contemporary illustrations and plates of some of the most notable artworks in the gallery. It is a beautifully produced book, not so much a coffee table book, more a coffee tray tome. It is available from Allied Retail and Commercial Ltd at a price of Lm8.55 or €19.92.
It takes the reader right through from a genealogy of the Medici family, on through every period represented within its walls, with art dating back as far as the 13th century.
One interesting facet of this publication is an extensive section devoted to potted biographies of the artists whose work is exhibited in the Uffizi. This little book is one to dip in and out of and certainly one to treasure.
