We must say: The ingenuity of Showtime readers knows no bounds. We have so far received some stunning entries to this year's writing competition. To refresh your memories, this year you are being asked to write a "newspaper" feature on a subject connected to the arts. It can be a review of a theatre production, a concert or an art exhibition. Or it might be a preview of an artistic/cultural event like a play, a recital, a concert, or even a rock concert. Then again you might wish to write a piece on one of our heritage sites or events like Notte Bianca or some historical re-enactment. You may even come up with a completely original idea for an arts article, which would be fine by us.
The article should be no more than 600 words long and be written in a journalistic style, which should make the reader want to read the piece.
We have received quite a few entries concerned with the current state of the Royal Opera House. And in a similar context a couple of you have made some interesting suggestions re the perceived need for more al fresco venues, to take advantage of our long summer season. Some of you have taken up a suggestion voiced in an earlier edition of Showtime regarding the conversion of Fort St Elmo into a centre for artists and artisans. There have been some clever and also some very funny spoof reviews of theatre productions. Among these are a few references to our annual panto. There seems to be general consensus that the standard is, shall we say, not as consistent as it might be. Indeed we are delighted that so many of you have taken the time to write and send in your entries and that they are nearly all of a very high standard.
Entries should be sent to:
