Spaniard Jose Antonio Redondo has been dismissed by Astana, a source within the Swiss team backed by Kazakh companies said.

"Redondo has been sacked after failing to abide by team rules," the source, who wished to remain anonymous, told Reuters by telephone.

The 22-year-old Redondo, whose best result in 2007 was second place in the second stage of the Dauphine Libere, became the fifth rider this year to be sacked by a team that has suffered a number of doping scandals this season. The team's future is now in jeopardy as Astana could lose their ProTour licence for next season.
