While upholding Mario Schembri Wismayer's plea for more emphasis on and attention to the teaching and cultivation of English in our education system, as "the levels of spoken and written English are plummeting and hitting desperate levels," (The right and duty to speak English, August 31), the rest of his letter has a foul smell of blind prejudice and blatant ignorance about the function of the mother language in the social and cultural life of the people and its role in the education system, an anachronistic letter reminiscent of the 1920s and 1930s.
