Malta is a very small country but this fact should make us even prouder that we have our very own unique language, Semitic in origin but based on the Latin alphabet. Some big countries, America for example, do not have their own language but make do with English. It is an honour that Maltese is one of the official languages within the European Union.
Even the Australian government has seen fit to include Maltese on the list of official languages that a student may study to obtain the Victorian Certificate of Education (equivalent to the General Certificate of Education that may still apply in Malta). Indeed, Maltese is taught in a number of classes around Australia. By all means let us all be conversant with English as it is the most widely spoken language, but let us not stoop to denigrate our national language. Where is the pride of being Maltese?
