It is only obvious, let alone true, that English as an international tongue is essential to any one person for a limitless number of reasons, which are most evident to the average citizen. But executing the proposal as suggested by Mario Schembri Wismayer (The Right And Duty To Speak English, August 31) to drop our cherished local language as though it fitted inappropriately in a gallery of exquisite art is utter nonsense. Not only is it illogical, insulting and unfounded in the least but it verges on the traitorous and is disrespectful to all those gentlemen who for years have crusaded for others, rich and poor, to accept our unique language as the language we are obliged to call our own and dutifully preserve.

Mr Schembri Wismayer should apologise to who sincerely believes the language is that undying factor that makes us Maltese a proud and exceptional people. And if the former is of the opinion that the "Maltese camp" as he so calls those who support the Maltese language as our sole national language is in any way militant let it be known that this attitude has been adopted so to defend what is left of what was once a rich and beautiful language against the likes of people with impertinent and unpatriotic ideas!
