Archbishop Tommaso Caputo has been appointed Apostolic Nuncio.

He takes over from Mgr Felix del Blanco Prieto, who was recently appointed Papal Almoner.

Mgr Caputo was born in Naples on October 17, 1950 and was ordained on April 10, 1974.

On gaining a doctorate in Canon Law in 1980, he joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He has served in the papal missions in Rwanda, the Philippines and Venezuela and in the Department of General Affairs in the Secretariat of State.

Since June 19, 1993, Mgr Caputo has been Head of Protocol at the Vatican's Secretariat of State. He speaks Spanish, English and French besides Italian. Mgr Caputo will receive his Episcopal consecration from the Pope on September 29, in St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican.
