The Graffitti group has urged the government to grant a subsidy to bakers to compensate for the increase in the price of flour.
The price of flour has increased by Lm1.60 on every 50kg sack and bakers are demanding a subsidy or the go-ahead to increase the price of a Maltese loaf of bread by 2c.
Graffitti urged the government to take into consideration the fact that Maltese bread is a basic social need in society as well as the traditional aspect of the loaf.
State subsidy on Maltese bread is essential for low-income families who are already facing difficulties on their quality of life because of the various financial burdens, it said.
"The government can compensate for the subsidy to bakers through income from other sources. For example, the government should consider an increase in the taxation of bank profits and the gaming industry, thus generating income for social purposes," Graffitti suggested.
