The Attard speed camera is fully operational. It is administered by the Birkirkara Joint Committee of Local Councils and the Attard council is part of this committee.
The device detects and records all moving vehicles travelling above 50 km/h, in both directions through Notary Zarb Street, Attard. Motorists will always be issued with a fine if caught overspeeding. If that ticket is not paid within seven working days, a Tribunal summons will later be issued without fail. Written complaints may be sent to my office, the Petitions Board or to the Commissioner of Justice himself.
Mr Ralph Cassar (The Sunday Times, August 12) refers to some tickets waived because they happen to be friends of certain public officials at a local level. This is totally untrue and unfounded. He may be referring to some ticket acquittals by the Petitions Board or the Local Tribunal. The Commissioner for Justice only has the prerogative to acquit the offender during proceedings and it is not considered illegal, even if it sounds unjust to those who were found guilty or paid the fine.
To date no single accident has been recorded in the area where speed cameras have been installed. Regretfully, accidents happen only when the public perceived that the camera was inactive.
Do we need speed cameras to have traffic signs obeyed? Do we need speed cameras to induce drivers to slow down and respect the speed limit in a fully urbanised zone like that in Notary Zarb Street, Attard?
