I sympathise with Mr Paul Bugeja (The Sunday Times, August 26) and his injured wife for their long wait at St Luke's Hospital's Accident and Emergency Department.

I too suffered a sprained ankle at the beginning of August and endured a long wait, but I did notice the amount of people waiting. I also heard the calls to the A&E cubicles for ECG machines, which to my layman's mind suggested cardiac patients being brought in, and they were very frequent indeed.

I am not a goody two shoes, but I would never expect a sprain to take priority over a heart attack or a suspected one. Incidentally, I found out later that, during my wait, a 56-year-old neighbour was rushed to A&E with a heart attack. He definitely jumped the queue, quite rightly making me wait to be seen.

I noticed how hard the medical staff were working and the care was fantastic right from the time one arrived at A&E with the porters' care. I have nothing but praise for them and thank them.
