Veteran triathlete Nicky Farrugia, one of the pioneers of the sport on our islands, will be adding to his list of achievements at the weekend when he takes part in the Cologne 226 Ironman in Germany.

Farrugia travelled all across the continent on his way to completing 14 long distance triathlons, 13 of them full distance Ironman. He even completed a double Ironman in Malta, in December 1994, in aid of a local charity.

Sunday's Ironman will be held in the heart of Cologne and the surrounding Lake Fuhlingen area. The distances are 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and a full 42.2km marathon finishing in the city centre.

Farrugia was assisted by Andy Colbourne and sport and exercise physiologist Maria Mifsud Bonnici.

His sponsors are Triton Sports, IRC Vacation Club, Radisson SAS Golden Sands and Good Earth.
