Mepa schedules Is-Simblija
This site was the property of Iosefi Callus and was confiscated in the late 16th century by the Order of St. John after Callus was charged with high treason and hanged at Saqqajja, in Rabat. Subsequently, the property was administered by the Assemblea, from which the site's toponym was derived in a corrupted form as Is-Simblija.
This rural complex comprises of a chapel, a rock-cut beast-driven mill room, a furnace, a number of rock-cut chambers used for the keeping of sheep, and an artesian well. The chapel is mentioned in various historical documents together with the surrounding fields and orchards.
In 2000 this complex was restored by the Restoration Unit (Works Division) in partnership with Mepa as part of the deliverables of the ARAMIS project co-funded by the EU.
