A 20-year-old man was jailed for three years and fined Lm1,000 after he admitted to trafficking in cannabis and being in possession of heroin close to a youth centre.

Ian Xuereb, of Floriana, pleaded guilty to committing the crime on and before July last year.

Magistrate Miriam Hayman heard that Mr Xuereb was found in possession of 13.61 grammes of cannabis of 8.8 per cent purity.

She noted he had ignored previous chances granted to him by the courts to change his ways and jailed him for three years. She also fined him Lm1,000 and ordered that the time spent in preventive custody be deducted from the jail term.

Police Inspector Pierre Grech prosecuted.
