In virtually every issue of The Times and The Sunday Times, there are items and letters regarding the lack of investment in Gozo and of threats to its beautiful environment.
As an "honorary Gozitan" I am naturally most concerned by this.
Both political parties make all sorts of promises about Gozo as a general election approaches, but once the victorious party is safely ensconced in power, these promises will no doubt evaporate with the rest of the hot air emitted during the election campaign. Perhaps it is now time for the Gozitans to form a truly independent "Gozo Party" with the sole aim of looking after the interests of the island of Gozo and of its inhabitants.
This party would support either main party only if the goods promised by them in election campaigns were truly delivered. If they were not delivered, then the "Gozo Party" would withdraw its support.
Given the wafer-thin majorities involved in Maltese general elections, a "Gozo Party" would inevitably hold the balance of power, thus ensuring that Gozo would no longer be the forgotten island.
